7/8/2023 0 Comments Witches by brenda lozano![]() ![]() This captivating novel of two Mexicos envisions the writer as a healer and offers a generous and distinctly female way of understanding the complex world we all inhabit. But it is Feliciana's and Paloma's stories that draw her own story out of her, taking her on a journey to understanding her place in the world and the power of her voice. Growing up in Mexico City, Zoe attempts to find her way in a society straitjacketed by its hostile macho culture. In the tiny village of San Felipe in Jalisco province, where traditional ways and traditional beliefs are a present reality, Feliciana tells the story of her life, her community's acceptance of her as a genuine curandera and the difficult choices faced by her joyful and spirited cousin Paloma who is both a healer and a Muxe - a trans woman. Weaving together two parallel narratives, Witches tells the story of Feliciana, an indigenous curandera or healer, and Zoe, a journalist: two women who meet through the murder of Feliciana's cousin Paloma. ![]() I came to understand that you can't really know another woman until you know yourself. ![]() I had wanted to get to know them, but I realised right away that the people I needed to know better were my sister Leandra and my mother. Last year's Elevation was a lovely, fable-like novella about the divisions running like fault lines through the country. Lately, King has turned his empathetic vision outward, addressing the social and political crises pressing down on us all. More central to his enduring popularity is his ability to create textured, credible portraits of real people beset by appalling circumstances and struggling, often futilely, to survive. But King's ability to generate world-class scares has never been the most important aspect of his work. King once famously remarked on his willingness to "go for the gross-out" in fiction and he has done so to great effect over many books and many years. Beneath its extravagant plot and typically propulsive prose, the book is animated by a central concern that could not be more relevant: the inhumane treatment of children. The Institute is the latest to emerge, and it is classic King, with an extra measure of urgency and anger. Always prolific, King seems to have tapped into a bottomless reservoir of narrative. His output during this period includes more than 20 novels and several collections of short fiction, along with numerous screenplays and assorted nonfiction. The Institute by Stephen King focuses on the inhumane treatment of children - in this case, children with special abilities. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Tree of smoke book![]() ![]() ![]() Spanning thirty years, and over 700 pages, it’s still a disappointment when you arrive at the last page. brothers from Arizona (who appeared in Johnson’s Angels), from a widowed Canadian nurse who can’t stop reading Calvin, from a Sergeant who seems to be perpetually tripping on acid, from a German hit-man, from a priest in the Philippines who thinks he’s Judas, from a “civilian” war-hero Colonel who’s trying to implement his own unorthodox campaign against the Vietcong. Come on, aren't we reading the lovestory of Ravinder and Khushi. Another irritating thing that the writer does is to always quote Khushi as 'Khushi- the one i love'. He goes on repeating the phrase '.because i am madly in love with Khushi' over and over again, as if he thinks that a reader might actually not understand it. Her stage name was a compilation of Nora's high school best friend, Traci the character Katharine Hepburn played in "The Philadelphia Story" (1940), and the last name Lords, after her favorite actor from her favorite show, "Hawaii Five-O" (CBS, 1968-1980), Jack Lords. Traci Elizabeth Lords was born Nora Louise Kuzma on May 7, 1968, in Steubenville, OH. Not content to stick with features, Lords broke off into other avenues - music, television, even video games - making sure that despite her sordid past, perhaps someday she would be associated with something more respectable. Since that unfortunate time, when the scandal of her being too young for porn rocked the industry to its core, Lords was one of the few porn stars to legitimately go mainstream, appearing in several television series, low-budget movies and the occasional studio film, including the Wesley Snipes vampire vehicle, "Blade" (1998). No matter what path actress Traci Lords attempted when her career finally came to an end, she would for better or for worse be remembered for being one of the most famous and successful - not to mention underage - adult film stars in history, having done roughly 100 XXX-rated movies while under the age of 18. ![]() |
